Steamship Mutual is a P&I insurance company, with 240 employees worldwide. The main office is based near Liverpool Street station, London. We have offices in Bermuda, Brazil, Cyprus, Greece, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, and the United States.

Overall Job Purpose :

Responsibility to provide P&I claims handling service and advice to the Club’s Japanese members, and to perform a consultative role in the Tokyo office for more inexperienced claims staff.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

• To process major claims in line with company operating procedures
• To handle assigned claims in accordance with company procedures, provide advice on claims related issues and identify the need for loss prevention activity.
• Working with a high degree of independence, taking ownership and responsibility for your caseload, but seeking advice and supportive guidance from senior staff as appropriate.
• To ensure correct upkeep of claims files, including efiling, claims reserves and the overall management of claims.
• To promote the relationship between the Club and existing Members for which the claims team is responsible.
• To brief senior claims staff responsible for Japan and the Syndicate Head of Claims in respect of any significant developments involving significant claims, as well as other issues involving the team such as training needs, travel, progression, and motivation for self-improvement.
• To act as a senior member of the claims team in Tokyo and guide claims handlers where appropriate.
• To facilitate effective communication of claims handling issues within the claims team.
• To be available to handle Member issues that may arise outside office hours.
• To produce relevant articles for inclusion in Club publications.
• To carry out any other duties that are within the scope of personal skills and abilities whenever reasonably instructed.
• To attend appropriate training and to develop relevant knowledge and skills.
• Travel will be required as necessary both regionally and to our global office network.

 Person Specification:

• Substantial experience handling P&I claims of medium to high complexity, from another P&I club, insurer, law firm or shipowner.
• Legal qualifications / experience is desirable but not essential.
• Fluent in Japanese, plus a good standard of spoken and written English.
• Ability to build and maintain effective business relationships at all levels, both internally and externally.
• Highly organised, motivated, and enthusiastic with an excellent attention to detail.
• Ability to deliver high quality work within agreed timeframes to and prioritise individual workload.
• Proactive and able to use own initiative.
• The ability to work within a team.
