Job Description

The District Manager is a member of the company’s Café Leadership Team and is responsible for managing the operational needs of their café portfolio and overall technology across all 49th Parallel cafés. This leader’s key focus areas will be elevating the culture of our cafes by inspiring our teams to deliver on an exceptional customer and coffee experience, development of the coffee training program including drink menu creation, updating and maintaining technology, all with a continuous improvement and operational excellence mindset.

This position will serve as a role model, both internally and externally, and will exemplify the company’s culture, values & behaviours. The position will be based in the Lower Mainland, with periodic travel required. This District manager will report to Director of Retail Cafes.

Key Responsibilities

Café Culture & Operations

  • Oversee day to day operations in 49th cafés including working closely with Café Managers and Executive Chef; be able to step in and successfully operate any Front of House position in the café
  • Inspire and Engage Café teams to deliver exceptional customer service at all 49th cafés
  • Ensure café raw materials and labour goals are being met; support café teams to execute goals
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of café Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Monitor and reply to customer feedback (Google reviews, Yelp reviews, and UberEats reviews) and determine ways to improve the overall café experience

Café Coffee & Culture Training

  • Lead and oversee coffee and culture training program including the creation, implementation, and ongoing administration of the program, materials, and updates. Communicate training expectations and program to Coffee Trainer.
  • Define the training program for new items, routines, and techniques in collaboration with Coffee Trainer
  • Assist Coffee Trainer for any training and developing existing training manual
  • Conduct training or delegate to Café Managers when Coffee Trainer is not available
  • Set annual KPIs for Coffee Trainer, and assist Director of Retail Cafes in Annual Performance Reviews

Café Menu, Technology, and Customer Experience

  • Develop new and exciting drink menu options while keeping updated on industry trends
  • Ensure 49th Parallel exceptional customer service is executed at all 49th cafes
  • Lead technology for cafés including Lightspeed updates (Menus and Price changes), Moneris, UberEats, order ahead, and Shopify
  • Main contact person for Moneris
  • Leading UberEats program for 49th Parallel and Lucky’s Doughnuts
  • Leading Order ahead program for 49th Parallel cafes
  • Monitor and maintain online doughnut ordering (Shopify) with Executive Chef collaboration
  • Create maintenance program on Espresso machine, HVAC and other equipment

*Other projects and duties may be assigned on a periodic basis

Knowledge & Skills

  • Excellent knowledge of café and specialty coffee industry and market in North America
  • 5 years Café management experience, preferably in specialty coffee
  • Previous experience working in a unionized environment a strong asset
  • Proven track record of building and maintaining strong teams
  • Ability to build strong relationships with peers and employees
  • Exceptional leadership and management experience
  • Results-oriented with exceptional execution capabilities
  • Strong inspirational leader who enables teams deliver on goals
  • Solid understanding and ability to manage financial targets, including GM, Revenue, COGS, and labour costs
  • Excellent customer focus
  • Attention to detail and presentation of information
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Highly developed communications (verbal, written) skills
  • Good knowledge of computer skills – Powerpoint, Excel, Word
  • Ability to travel as required
