Job Description

About Castelion

Castelion is bringing a new approach to defense development and production: one that focuses on short, iterative design cycles, rapid testing in development, and modern commercial manufacturing strategies for production at scale. We’re designing, building, and testing next generation long range strike weapons systems to give America and its Allies a definitive edge and deter future conflicts.

EH&S Engineer

We are seeking an experienced Environmental, Health, and Safety (EH&S) Engineer to join our team in a fast-paced, high-volume manufacturing environment. The ideal candidate will be responsible for ensuring the safety and environmental compliance of our manufacturing processes while driving continuous improvement in health, safety, and environmental performance. This role requires a strong understanding of process safety management, hazard analysis, regulatory compliance, and best practices for industrial safety in the energetics sector.

As an integral part of the team, the EH&S Engineer will work closely with operations, engineering, and regulatory teams to implement and enforce safety programs, risk assessments, and compliance initiatives to protect both employees and the environment.

Responsibilities

  • Process Safety Management (PSM): Develop, implement, and maintain process safety management programs to ensure the safe operation of energetics manufacturing processes, including conducting hazard analyses (HAZOP, LOPA, FMEA), managing risk assessments, and identifying safety gaps.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA, ATF, NFPA, and other safety/environmental standards) for hazardous processes, chemicals, and materials used in energetics manufacturing.
  • Safety Program Development: Design and implement safety programs, policies, and procedures that promote a culture of safety and health, reduce risks, and ensure the protection of employees and the environment.
  • Incident Investigation & Root Cause Analysis: Lead investigations into safety incidents and environmental events, identify root causes, and develop corrective actions and preventive measures to minimize the likelihood of reoccurrence.
  • Environmental Compliance: Oversee the monitoring, reporting, and compliance for environmental issues including waste disposal, air and water emissions, and hazardous material handling. Ensure that all environmental permits and documentation are up to date.
  • Training & Awareness: Provide training to employees on EH&S procedures, emergency response plans, hazard recognition, and safe work practices to ensure full engagement in safety initiatives across all departments.
  • Emergency Response Planning: Develop and implement emergency response plans, including risk assessments, evacuation procedures, and emergency drills, to effectively respond to potential accidents or chemical spills.
  • Continuous Improvement: Drive continuous improvement initiatives for safety, health, and environmental performance using lean manufacturing, risk analysis, and industry best practices to enhance operational safety and reduce environmental impact.
  • Safety Audits & Inspections: Conduct regular safety audits, inspections, and assessments to identify hazards, ensure compliance, and verify the effectiveness of safety programs.
  • Collaboration: Work cross-functionally with engineering, operations, maintenance, and leadership to ensure safety standards are integrated into all stages of manufacturing processes, from design through production and maintenance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Safety Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in process safety, EH&S, or related roles, preferably within a high-volume manufacturing or energetics industry.
  • In-depth knowledge of process safety management (PSM) and industrial safety principles, including hazard analysis techniques (e.g., HAZOP, FMEA, LOPA).
  • Experience with regulatory standards, including OSHA, EPA, ATF, NFPA, and other relevant safety and environmental regulations specific to energetics manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with hazardous materials handling, chemical safety, and environmental compliance in manufacturing settings.
  • Strong ability to conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions to prevent incidents and improve safety outcomes.
  • Experience with safety management systems, incident investigation tools, and environmental management systems.
  • Ability to develop and deliver safety training programs and safety awareness campaigns for diverse teams.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with various teams across the organization.
  • Proficiency in safety management software, Microsoft Office Suite, and relevant industry-specific tools.

Preferred Skills

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or similar certifications are highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with energetics manufacturing processes, including explosive materials and energetics-specific safety practices.
  • Knowledge of Lean Six Sigma or other continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Experience with environmental management certifications (e.g., ISO 14001) or sustainability initiatives.

All employees are granted long-term stock incentives as part of their employment as Castelion. All employees receive access to comprehensive medial, vision, and dental insurance, and the company offers three weeks of paid time off per year.
