About Us

The Department of Mechanical & Materials Engineering (MME) is one of four departments in the Faculty of Engineering. Faculty and staff in the department support and foster the educational and research pursuits of undergraduate and graduate engineering students, while providing the best student experience.

Responsibilities

The Laboratory Manager is responsible for providing technical support for assigned undergraduate teaching laboratories in the Department of Mechanical & Materials Engineering. The role ensures the smooth operation and maintenance of the laboratory facility and equipment. The Laboratory Manager provides effective and efficient management of the laboratory in all respects, and ensures that faculty members and students have the required information, guidance, documentation, and resources required. The role acts as a point person for health and safety issues, conducts inspections to ensure safe laboratory practices are employed, and assists in the resolution of issues that arise in the laboratories. The Laboratory Manager also participates in the development of protocols, performs laboratory techniques, and trains staff, students and other users of the facility.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
  • Completion of, or working towards, Professional Engineer designation
  • Graduate Degree is preferred

Experience:

  • 3 years working experience in an academic laboratory environment, performing various laboratory techniques
  • Experience overseeing staff and students in a laboratory is preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of general laboratory procedures and familiarity with preventative maintenance techniques and practices
  • Proficiency with robotics and manufacturing automation technologies (e.g. sensors, actuators, drives, pneumatic systems, PLC ladder logic, industrial robots)
  • Proficiency with mechatronic system design technologies (e.g. design, electrical power circuits, electrical-mechanical actuators, micro-controllers)
  • Proficiency with measurement, sensing and engineering experimentation technologies (e.g. LabVIEW software, sensors, signal conditioning and measurement systems)
  • Proficiency with laser cutting and 3D printing, and general knowledge of SolidWorks
  • Communication skills to describe technical concepts effectively to both novice and sophisticated users
  • Ability to write clear, concise and accurate procedural documentation
  • Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy
  • Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate the University's events and activities
  • Ability to provide guidance, support and feedback in a way that is positively received
  • Excellent troubleshooting ability along with hands-on expertise in technical support
  • Possess a reputation for resourcefulness with a strong sense of accountability and initiative
  • Ability to delegate work and provide team members with clear direction and support in meeting their objectives
  • Proven ability and natural inclination to develop relationships by interacting with people in a professional, respectful and diplomatic manner
  • Ability to provide guidance on the proper and safe use of materials and equipment and to adhere to legislated safety requirements and Western safety policies
  • Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
  • Demonstrated ability to research/investigate issues and resolve problems
