Position Overview:

The Shift Power Engineer will operate and maintain a Steam Plant at Assiniboine College in compliance with the Power Engineer Act, Provincial Codes and acceptable best trade practices, as well as Workplace Health and Safety regulations. In the absence of the Chief Power Engineer and/or Facility Manager, the incumbent may be responsible for the entire physical plant operation. The Shift Power Engineer may be the initial contact in service requests under the guidance of the Chief Power Engineer and/or Facility Manager.

Key Responsibilities:

• When assigned as Shift Engineer this person is in charge of operating and the safe care and control of a Steam Plant in accordance with the Power Engineers Act.
• Perform corrective and preventive maintenance on variety of equipment as assigned. Makes sure the service requests are managed and arranged to be completed in a timely fashion.
• Conduct routine inspections of equipment, identifying problems and taking proactive steps to prevent failures to ensure they operate in a safe and efficient manner.
• Records and reacts to (any abnormalities) all readings from meters and gauges for steam production, fuel consumption, water consumption and power conservation in the daily engineer’s log sheet and enters the daily activities at the complex into the Log Book.
• Responsible for the water testing and treatment; also, for the testing and treatment of the heating and cooling systems throughout the complex.

Qualifications:

• This position does not directly supervise a staff. This position may provide guidance and delegates the work of Power Engineer-Class 4. This position may show other employees how to do a particular task, ensure quality and quantity standards are met, and give advice and guidance on work procedures.
• Receives general instruction and direction from the Chief Power Engineer and may receive instruction from the Facility Manager.
• The incumbent in this position must be aware of the need to operate the plant as safely and efficiently as possible and is encouraged to bring forward suggestions to the Chief Power Engineer and Facility Manager regarding safety, energy management, water conservation and any other suggestions that would enhance the system operation.
• Because this position involves shift work, the incumbent must be alert at all times and must be able to make decisions on his/her own initiative in any emergency that may arise. An Emergency could be Life, Property or Security threatening.
