Safety Engineer – Montreal Metro Blue Line Extension

Job Summary:

We are seeking a Safety Engineer to support a metro project by ensuring compliance with industry standards, conducting safety analyses based on required codes, and verifying technical documentation. The role involves close collaboration with another safety engineer and with other engineering teams, risk assessment, and ensuring system safety and reliability throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities:

Safety Analysis

• Conduct and provide Safety Analysis and reports notably for tunnels, metro stations, track and traction system safety reports based on Canadian and US codes notably NFPA 130, NFPA 101, NFPA 72, NFPA 70, …
• Develop safety requirements and criteria for test and commissioning phases,
• Develop and maintain Hazard Logs and support risk mitigation strategies,
• Develop and maintain hazards associated with test and commissioning phases,
• Conduct hazard identification (HAZID), Interface Hazard Analysis (IHA), conduct and verify Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOP), FMECA and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA).

Compliance with Standards

• Ensure compliance with Canadian and American standards like NBC, CCQ of Québec, NFPA 130, NFPA 101, NFPA 72, NFPA 70,
• Ensure compliance with EN 50126, EN 50129, EN 50128, EN 50122, IEC 61508, and other applicable railway safety standards,
• Verify alignment of technical solutions with regulatory and contractual requirements,

Technical Documentation & Verification

• Write, review and validate technical notes, safety cases, and system engineering documentation notably for tunnel, stations, garages and their related systems.

Failure and Risk Assessments

• Perform system and infrastructures safety risks assessments,
• Conduct safety analysis to optimize system performance and lifecycle costs,

Project Coordination & Stakeholder Communication

• Collaborate with system engineers, designers, suppliers, and certification bodies,
• Support safety audits and assessments for project approval and certification,

✅ Education & Experience:

• Degree in Mechanical, Systems, Electrical, Civil or Railway Engineering,
• Experience in Safety for railway and metro, or transportation projects,

✅ Technical Skills:

• Familiarity with railway safety and RAMS standards (notably NFPAs, CNB and CCQ) and EN 50126, EN 50129, IEC 61508, etc.
• Experience in hazard and failure analysis methods and system safety evaluations,
• Proficiency in writing safety analysis and reports, (tunnels, stations, Track and Trction, …),
• Familiarity with FMECA, FTA, RBD (Reliability Block Diagram), and risk assessment tools,

• Excellente communicationand documentation skills.
• Proficiency in French (French speaking),
• Strong analytical thinking and attention to detail.
• Ability to work in cross-functional teams and multidisciplinary environments.
