About the Role

The Training and Education Coordinator coordinates and supports Vuntut Gwitchin students attending post-secondary institutions within and outside of Yukon. The position further seeks out and manages funding opportunities to meet the diverse educational needs of adult citizens through the administration of the Aboriginal Human Resources Development Agreement (AHRDA-ISETS) on behalf of the Council of Yukon First Nations (CYFN) and coordinates training and employment activities and opportunities for citizens in Whitehorse and Old Crow. Reporting to the Education Director, the Training and Education Coordinator’s responsibilities include but are not limited to;

  • Managing the processes for VGFN scholarships and bursaries by posting funding opportunities and deadlines, responding to inquiries, ensuring applications are complete and compiling submissions for committee’s review and decision.
  • Providing support and guidance to students as they transition from high school to post-secondary education. Helping them to choose a program, supporting the application process which may include standardized tests, writing essays, and completing financial aid forms.
  • Maintaining a regular personal connection with students and supports them to succeed academically, emotionally and socially while attending post-secondary institutions.
  • Providing guidance, promoting a sense of community and providing resources to navigate challenges on their road to achieving their academic and personal goals.
  • Developing and maintaining the historical database to capture past student data (e.g. program, outcomes, employment history data).
  • Tracking post-secondary student enrolment, study programs, progress, etc. to maintain awareness of citizen’s educational pursuits.
  • Documenting resources and networks to have a reference for referring future students as applicable (e.g. connecting students to good tutors, accommodations/landlords, community supports).
  • Administering financial processes (e.g. purchase orders and cheque requisitions) as they relate to student funding, expenses and tuition. Liaising with post-secondary institutions, students, parents/guardians, and funding sources as required to ensure payments and financial processes are complete.
  • Providing administrative support for AHRDA-ISETS funding processes. Working directly with CYFN to submit applications, responding to requests for information and liaising with CYFN to ensure requirements and documentation are complete.
  • Communicating initiatives and opportunities to citizens, responding to inquiries, and engaging with the community to share information and encourage engagement.
  • Promoting citizen awareness for relevant training and employment opportunities. Assisting individuals to write resumes and job applications, and to prepare for interviews.
  • $54.85 - $67.04 per hour/per annum (Based on education and experience)
  • Flexible Work Hours: Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation offers flexible working hours. Employees may choose to work 65, 70, 75, or 80 hours biweekly (some guidelines will apply).
  • 4% Northern Community Remoteness Allowance for employees residing in Old Crow full-time.
  • 4% Northern Travel Allowance for employees residing in Old Crow full-time.
  • 4 weeks’ vacation to start plus two weeks paid time off over the Christmas season.

  • Post-secondary education in education services, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Experience in an education or education administration role is an asset.
  • Education and experience performing a range of administrative functions (e.g., coordinating meetings, records management, processing financial transactions, managing correspondence).
  • Experience providing personal and/or academic support to individuals or students is an asset.
  • Experience building relationships and networks with community resources and external contacts.
  • Experience creating processes and systems to deliver a service and to capture data/information.
  • Proficient with computer programs including Microsoft Office.
