About the Role:

The Associate Director is responsible for driving and managing the strategic growth and development of Springer Current Reports journals, a portfolio of medical and scientific review journals. This role involves managing a team of in-house publishing editors with commissioning targets, engaging with external editors and editorial board members, and delivering on portfolio budgets and performance targets. The role also includes contributing to the overall success of the Springer Journals publishing unit by nurturing a team and creating an environment that attracts top authors.

Core responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: Team Management, Editorial and Publishing Development, External Engagement, Strategy and Policy Implementation and Contribution to Springer Journals Division.

Responsibilities:

  • Foster a positive and energetic team environment

  • Partner with the Publishing Director to set performance, development, and commissioning goals

  • Conduct regular performance reviews, provide coaching, and promote continuous improvement

  • Monitor staff well-being and address challenges proactively

  • Encourage adoption of Springer Nature’s "Be Part of Progress" brand

  • Drive portfolio growth by developing and launching new review and Current Report journals

  • Expand content acquisition, commissioning, and retention while ensuring a best-in-class author experience

  • Align portfolio strategies with Springer Nature’s broader priorities in partnership with the Publishing Director

  • Establish and track KPIs, ensuring a data-driven approach to portfolio management and taking corrective action when needed

  • Maximize the efficiency and productivity of journal editors and reviewers

  • Monitor editorial performance, address service-level issues, and enhance the author and reviewer experience

  • Build relationships within the research community and demonstrate thought leadership

  • Explore and implement new tools and resources to support content commissioning and acquisition

  • Disseminate market research to inform team and portfolio development

  • Champion a data-driven culture and implement new policies, processes, workflows, and systems

  • Collaborate with internal teams, participate in cross-departmental projects, and represent the Current Reports portfolio within the organization

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; an advanced degree is a plus

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in journal publishing, preferably in academic, medical, or scientific publishing

  • Experience in people management and/or leading teams is highly desirable

  • Candidates currently in a senior-level capacity who are ready to take the next step into management are encouraged to apply

  • Strong commercial industry experience and knowledge

  • Experience with strategic decision-making, market analysis, and portfolio growth

  • Proven leadership and analytical skills, with the ability to set and drive strategic priorities

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build relationships across editorial teams, researchers, and industry partners

  • Passion for research and science, with enthusiasm for innovation and continuous improvement in academic publishing

US Annualized Base Salary Range: $120,000 - 135,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level and equity. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
