About the Company: Nunavut Legal Aid is seeking a Family Lawyer to provide robust legal aid services to qualified Nunavummiut and handle all family law, child protection matters before the Nunavut Court of Justice and Nunavut Court of Appeal. With over 70 staff, including 30 lawyers, serving all communities in Nunavut, we are committed to providing excellent and culturally competent client service that integrates Inuit traditional values and principles into our practice.

About the Role: Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal advice to clients on family law and child protection matters and procedures, virtually and in person.
  • Provide oral and written advocacy on behalf of clients.
  • Representation at procedural and approved hearings and motions.
  • Attendance and representation in custody, access, support, child protection, support enforcement and other family law matters.
  • Review court documents and assist in drafting pleadings and other documents.
  • Provide family law services in the Nunavut Court of Justice, circuit courts and virtually.
  • Maintain conflict lists, record data, and produce reports as required.
  • Travel may be required within the territory to assist in circuit courts and work with eligible clients.
  • Perform other duties and administrative tasks as assigned and remain adaptable and flexible in a changing environment.
  • Participate in the Public Legal Education and Information (PLEI) program.

Qualifications: Member in good standing with the Law Society of Nunavut or a recognized law society in another jurisdiction of Canada.

Required Skills:

  • Demonstrated family law experience and knowledge of relevant family law legislation, including child protection law, with the ability to research and retrieve information as required.
  • Demonstrated experience in handling complex family legal issues.
  • Experience practicing law as a family lawyer, including providing advice, Summary Legal Advice to Families (SLAF), mediation, settlement conferences, trials, etc.
  • Client-focused with personal motivation and accountability.
  • Ability to work independently, with limited supervision, and to lead in a fast-paced environment.
  • Sound judgment and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work with other legal support staff, lawyers, private panels and managers.
  • Ability to read and interpret the relevant acts and regulations specific to Nunavut, including the Family Services Act, Legal Services Act, Children’s Law Act of NU, and relevant support guidelines.
  • Intermediate level skills in Microsoft Office and other office applications including SharePoint and Teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to use the latest communication technologies, including tablets and smartphones, and utilize video conferencing platforms to deliver services virtually.

Pay range and compensation package: Salary package range - $100,000K to $190K, including a generous benefits package.
