JOB SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Regional Radiation Oncology Division head and the medical director concerned, the radiation oncologist practices as part of the medical team at the Dr. Léon Richard Oncology Centre, which includes radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, hematologists and gynecologic oncologists. The Oncology Centre is affiliated with the Université de Sherbrooke and offers a comprehensive array of chemotherapy services, as well as advanced external radiation treatments including IMRT, VMAT, IGRT, pulmonary SBRT, DIBH, and various forms of brachytherapy.
At the Oncology Centre, innovation meets excellence. With its state-of-the-art facilities boast four Elekta linear accelerators, a high-dose rate (HDR) source projector, an orthovoltage device, a 4D CT simulator, and access to an MRI Sim. Among the platforms featured are New Brunswick's electronic health records, Meditech, the provincial patient communication system called NB Health portal as well as the integrated MOSAIQ system.
Radiation oncologists are medical specialists with expertise in the diagnosis and care of patients with malignant disease. They use knowledge of the basic and clinical sciences of oncology in the delivery of therapeutic ionizing radiation and other forms of treatment. Radiation oncologists apply knowledge of the techniques, indications and contraindications to the use of radiotherapy. They are responsible for its safe prescription for cancer and non-malignant indications, and the subsequent management of complications and follow-up with patients who have received treatment.
Radiation oncologists provide individualized care and support to adult patients and their loved ones throughout the trajectory of their disease. The cancer continuum includes health promotion and prevention measures, screening, initial assessment and diagnosis of cancer, treatment, survivorship, follow-up, and supportive, palliative and end-of-life care.
Radiation oncologists work within interdisciplinary teams to develop an evidence-based multimodal therapeutic approach. They also work with other health professionals to deliver diversified and comprehensive care to cancer patients and their loved ones.
Radiation oncologists are also required to take part in research activities in their field of practice. Medical radiation oncologists take an active part in the teaching activities in their department, in close collaboration with the Centre de formation médicale du Nouveau?Brunswick.
