The Vice President will be a key contributor of BWS’ growing risk team and will report to BWS’ Chief Risk Officer. The role will be based in Brookfield’s Toronto office at Brookfield Place.

The role will support our Global risk team focused on providing second line oversight, challenge and review of risk across the organization, including independently assessing and analyzing risk via internally developed risk models, stress testing and economic scenario analysis across the balance sheet and reporting findings to senior management and BWS’ Board of Directors

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborating with Investments, Actuarial, Finance and Risk teams to assess, monitor and manage investment, insurance, liquidity, market and other financial and non-financial risks across the Group.
  • Support the development of risk models and analytics to prepare Group consolidated risk analytics for presentation to BWS Risk Committee, senior management team and Board of Directors
  • Collaborate closely with operating company CRO’s and Risk teams to ensure consistency, alignment and oversight to ensure global best practice
  • Monitor Group risks against risk appetites and ensure compliance with stated risk metrics across financial and non-financial risks including early warning detection to inform business leaders and senior management of current or emerging risks across the organization.
  • Critically evaluate, develop and implement refinements to risk models for insurance risk reporting including reporting packages for management to review investment model outputs, sensitivities and results.
  • Review transactions that are presented to Investment Committee and prepare risk approvals to support transactions.
  • Continually challenge and ensure insurance risk profile stays within agreed risk appetite through the establishment, review and monitoring of risk limits.
  • Assist the broader Risk function in ad hoc projects and analysis.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Post-secondary degree in Actuarial Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Finance or equivalent
  • Completed or close to completing the Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) and the Fellow of the Canadian institute of Actuaries (FCIA) designations
  • 7 – 10 years of progressive work experience in insurance and risk
  • Strong knowledge of life and annuity products. Property & Casualty knowledge is an asset
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Power BI, VBA, Power Query, Python); experience with SQL or other data tools is an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to own and improve processes
  • Strong communication and collaborative skills, written and oral
  • Self-motivated and proactive with the ability to operate independently
  • Organizational skills to effectively manage priorities, multi-task where necessary, work well under pressure and meet timelines
  • Interpersonal skills and ability to develop collaborative relationships at all levels in the organization
  • Judgement, critical thinking and analytical skills combined with attention to detail and thoroughness
