Job Description

Located in North York, the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) is a not-for-profit professional association, providing advocacy and member services in support of the economic and professional interests of engineers across Ontario.

The Public Relations Coordinator will have a broad knowledge base and advanced skill set, as well as the ability to interact effectively with Board Directors and Committee members, government officials and stakeholders. This role supports OSPE’s efforts to raise public awareness of the engineering profession, enhance the organization’s profile, and advance advocacy initiatives.

Key responsibilities include developing public-facing content, supporting media and stakeholder relations, monitoring policy and legislative developments, and contributing to OSPE’s government relations strategy. Reporting to the Director of Public Affairs, the Public Relations Coordinator will work collaboratively with OSPE staff, volunteers, and external stakeholders. Professional maturity, detailed oriented, flexibility, sound judgment, initiative, and a willingness to undertake unfamiliar tasks from time to time are required .

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough research and ongoing monitoring of key issues of importance to the engineering profession, including energy, infrastructure, environment, research and innovation, and the labor market.
  • Analyze and interpret federal and provincial legislation, regulations, and policy updates—including ERO postings—to inform OSPE’s advocacy efforts and strategic policy positions. Participate in the development of budget submissions and policy proposals, contributing to strategy sessions and briefing materials.
  • Facilitate consultations and maintain ongoing engagement with internal and external stakeholders, to inform policy direction and responses. You will play a crucial role in reviewing submissions to ensure clarity, consistency, and alignment with OSPE’s goals. Ensure all submissions and responses are filed on time and to a high professional standard. Coordinate and support public relations events. This includes developing key messaging, preparing event materials, promotional materials, speeches, presentations and securing speakers. Working closely with our staff, you will arrange logistics and administer logistics for high-profile events such as Queen’s Park receptions, Federal Reception, the Engineering Conference, and OSPE CPD webinars. Collaborate across departments including Marketing, Academy and Events teams as needed for research projects, conferences, and public awareness initiatives.
  • Support OSPE’s Task Forces and working groups by coordinating meetings, drafting minutes and agendas, maintaining records, and ensuring timely follow-up on action items. This includes drafting policy position papers and issue statements, preparing and analyzing surveys, responding to research requests from OSPE Task Forces, and preparing related materials to support their work and advocacy efforts.
  • Draft policy submissions, government correspondence, briefing notes and issue statements; prepare materials for internal decision-making by senior management and the Board of Directors.
  • Contributes to progress reports for the department, the CEO, and members of the Board of Directors, including the preparation of Board meeting data sheets and summary updates.
  • Create and edit public-facing content, including articles for OSPE’s The Voice magazine policy explainer pieces, and position papers that communicate OSPE’s advocacy priorities.
  • Monitor and maintain the advocacy section of OSPE’s website for updates and scan relevant stakeholder and media sources for emerging issues and opportunities for engagement.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in communications, government relations, public affairs, political science, public relations, or a related discipline, and at least two years equivalent or related experience.
  • Excellent research/analytical skills.
  • Ability to review and analyze complex documents and distill key information.
  • Superior writing skills, including the ability to prepare high-quality communications materials for a variety of audiences.
  • Excellent attention to detail, ensuring accuracy and consistency across all written materials, submissions, and communications.
  • Confident public speaking and interpersonal skills to deliver presentations to, and lead consultations with, external stakeholders.
  • Excellent planning, organizing, time management, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of federal and provincial legislative processes and policy development.
  • Understanding of the engineering profession and related issues.
  • Government/public sector advocacy and association experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with professional associations or regulatory bodies preferred.
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office tools. 
  • Collaborative, team-oriented, and able to work across departments.
  • Willingness to work flexible/extended hours on occasion.
